Rats. I hadn't heard he was ill. Rats.
I spent a fair amount of time with Herb in the mid-nineties, when I would run away to Boston to study backgammon and avoid my dissertation. Herb was . . . unique? Super smart, of course. A black-socks-with-shorts, accountant kind of guy. Never particularly concerned with style, or appearances in general. In as much as I saw, his moods ranged from happy/funny to quiet/thoughtful and both were good company. We talked lots of backgammon, but also of people and psychology and philosophy. He was affable. I can't imagine anyone disliking him, which is often an insulting thing to say, but not in this case.
I remember chatting with Herb before a NEBC tournament when suddenly a money game across the room blew up into yelling, throwing, and aggressive chair-pushing. Eventually one player stormed off, and Herb muttered "Another satisfied customer."
Goodbye, Herb. I haven't seen you in years, but I'm sure missing you right now.
