How we learn from playing XG

Nice early decision. There are only two legal 5's and I think you can narrow the aces down to two as well (if you throw out 8/7...). That still leaves four possible plays.
I think (like most) OTB I would have settled for 13/8 for the five and then tried to figure out the ace. QF says to do otherwise (as you indicate). The problem with 13/8 is that you go from spares nicely positioned to too many on the 8-point and not enough of the midpoint. So how bad is 8/3? That starts a decent point, and duplicates opp's next action as he is coiled to make a homeboard point. At the moment White doesn't have a homeboard so the hit isn't as costly as typical.
Even after 8/3 the ace isn't a slam dunk. 6/5 is more diverse but White's plethora of builders means you are running out of chances to make an advanced anchor. Splitting seems to be almost mandatory.
OK, I'll do a positive and a non-negative: split (the positive) and slot the 3-point (a non-negative as it doesn't weaken the builder distribution).
(Minor) Splot: 24/23, 8/3
