I think your perception that there is lots of sponsorship money in any other game particularly sports is false.

With how many attend a tournament plus the perhaps 100 or so who watch streamed matches from it just how much value would a sponsorship give a company? About 10 -15 years ago it was not uncommon for a casino/hotel to give added money to backgammon tournaments. They realized how bad a deal that was for them and stopped.
