I think the Merit case is actually different. The owner(s) of the hotel love backgammon and they wanted to host a great tournament and there's no better way than adding big money to the prize pool. Why do they do it? Probably just because they can, when you consider all the added value at this tournament I doubt they make any profit out of it.
