Gus was by far the best commentator but he didn't say much....

This may be a big part of the issue. Commentators (in many competitions) feel compelled to commentate, even when there is nothing profound to say. From some of the quotes in your other post that looks to me like what was happening.

Note that in sports, they almost never put ONLY experts in the booth. They have a professional announcer paired with an expert. (True, some of those pro announcers seem anything but.) That seems to work OK quite often. Of course on WPT, they have one poker expert and one ex-tennis pro, son of an actor. How'd that turn out??
