Yep, this seems to be the consensus of the vast majority of posters on the subject of seeding: don't do it.

But in a game/sport that is struggling, it seems strange that we aren't willing to try things. To quote Mr Simborg: we're resistant to change. Seeds MUST have the same chance of drawing a bye but, after that, I think that the primary issue about seeding is what effect it would have upon attendance: positive or negative? And, more specifically - in the longer term.

Sure, there may be players who would 'on principle' not enter, but would they maintain that stance the next year, and the year after that? Clearly, there are strong players who seem to feel 'on principle' that it's not right. If it would have a significant negative effect upon attendance then it would NOT help them, to be sure. As I've stated before FWIW, if an event was seeded, and I wasn't to be seeded, it would not personally discourage me from entering; infact, I would actually be more likely to play!

The problem of who is (and isn't) seeded could be reduced by adopting the tennis style method of pseudo-random seeding. The 1 and 2 seeds, and 3 and 4 are randomly assigned to one half, with seeds 5 to 8 each in one quarter, 9 to 16 each in one eighth, and so on. With a good rating system used it would still have the effect of making it more likely that the better players met in the later rounds, rather than knocking each other out early on.

We all know players who love nothing more than to play, and beat, top players! They would be more likely to face them with a seeded draw. Sure, they would more likely go out early doors but - if they did beat the seed - they take up their seeded position in the draw!

I remain far from convinced that it would be bad for our game, though confess, in a game resistant to change, that it may be 'dead in the water'.
