Repeatable process. Yes, its called understanding the position.

I would also say that in actuality there are lots of small errors, however its the lack of significant mistakes that makes them good players.

Skill in backgammon is a level of comprehension of what you are doing and knowing what the game plan is, and how to execute it. Understanding that is where the hours come in.

Sorry, but there is no shortcut that I know of.
