The Turks are the next Japanese of backgammon. First we had the Danes and the Americans, and then some terrific Germans, and then a smattering of people from France, Switzerland, Israel and elsewhere. Then the Japanese (mainly Mochy, Michy and Akiko) took the world by storm.

Now it is the Turks who are emerging, and we will hear a lot more from that country in coming years. They have a tremendous number of great players competing regularly and many well-organized tournaments and more and more are playing competitively in the Open Division. I have had over a dozen students from Turkey, and aside from them all being really fine gentlemen, they all have a tremendous work-ethic and strong desire to learn the game. As we know, that's mostly what it takes to become a top player.
