Backgammon Ace

Pretty good fun! I guess it is perhaps easy to get a bit casual with all the swish and swosh visual effects but I guess this helps attracting players who aren't terribly hooked on backgammon but finds it fun to play because of this slickness.

One of my biggest annoyances is that you can play an almost perfect game and still lose a lot of rating if your opponent pulls off enough jokers to win the game. I am looking at my backgammon matches in my backgammon database now and I see that one game I played at 0.07 and my opponent played at 39.02 and I lost so I suspect I easily lost 10-15 rating points on this game.

On the other hand I just spotted that I have played against Phil Simborg:

Phil Simborg 7.93 Terje Pedersen (PureLuck) 0.02

and won this match. Sweet! :-)

I selected his name in the name dropdown and see that I have played him once more:

Phil Simborg 0.00 Terje Pedersen (PureLuck) 1.00

where he played a perfect game.

With the awesome tool that was just provided I would have been completely unaware of this. And with the help of my backgammon database that is (www.backgammonstudio.tk)...

As for the learning value of playing on backgammon ace I am not so sure. I suspect you can learn a lot more by playing consultation matches on my backgammon database where you get 10 random positions and have to find the correct answer. Me and Hall has been playing a few of these matches and have been discussing the positions when one or both of us made the wrong choice. It will also track your rating based on wins/losses and here there is very little luck involved as there is no dice throw that will save the day.

Another issue about Backgammon Ace is that the performance rating doesn't seem to be very accurate. At least in the one match I had to take a screenshot of when I got the chance to play against Mochy it said I played at 2.2 and Mochy at 2.9 but analyzing it with XG it found I played on 5.07 and Mochy on 4.55 which is pretty far off from the numbers Backgammon Ace reported.

Playing against the 'APE's is pretty annoying. One is worse than the other and it just becomes an insane game. Especially if you have played really well and is on track of making a good daily PR highscore and then one of these buggers comes along and everything goes to hell!

But for some laidback leisure activity in my sofa playing Backgammon Ace is pretty cool! :-)
