I think it is fair to say that it is way more difficult to play with a big lead than with a big deficit. When to cube can be tricky and I agree that many may be paralyzed by a big lead.

The general advice I can offer is to get an advanced anchor to cut down on gammon losses. Then it is easier to get to a cubeable position.
