Prioritizing Position Study?

I will go out on a limb and claim that reference positions are overrated. Certainly they aren't the only way to improve.

I used to know way more reference positions in the past compared to today. I didn't play any better but I had to invest mental energy in remembering all those positions. The overriding problem with reference positions is that they are hard to remember accurately. And the equities and gammon rates are even harder to memorize.

Even the very best get the application of reference positions wrong. Last year in the big Cyprus tournament I watched one of the top, top giants take a 1.600+ pass because he had a reference position which he felt was quite similar. I guess he messed up the mental adjustments. I think most could see it was a stone cold pass, including the giant(speculative) but because of his reference position he talked himself into taking.

I am not saying reference positions are rubbish, I just believe there are other ways of improving, ways which may be less draining.

Good luck with your quest to improve!
