Prioritizing Position Study?

Just trying to get myself organized for studying. So many of the positions I find in books, articles and postings are great examples of too close to tell or even matter otb. Others show the weakness of the bots. A very small percentage provide useful reference positions and lessons in play.
Reviewing match errors provides some good point lessons but I have never found that they result in significant improvements over time. Mostly good for keeping from going off the rails and maintaining current levels of play.
How do you approach developing your own set of reference positions for study rather than going back to robertie's advanced bg or reworking trice? How do you use Position study to improve your overall game play??
Thanks, Robert
