I personally think that what you are looking for might be better facilitated by engaging Phil through the backgammon learning centre directly.
They can provide structure , topics, and address areas of weakness directly.
This is on my TODO list.
I would love giant moderation and would happily but I have found that passive learning is generally useless. Taking turns presenting and studying topic areas addresses this.
At the 7-9ish level I believe most players can tell you what they need to study. Having the motivation, venue, support to do so is lacking.
I also expect that most players at this level have other priorities so a little anarchy is more likely to create longetivity...
That said I will create an agenda for the first meeting and ask quite a few of these types of questions
If the group wants moderation for a time... Great... If it would like to hire a giant for an on line seminar or group lesson also great.
I am not taking anything off the table.
I have stated 7ish to 9ish because a core group at this level has the ability to be fairly self sufficient.
I suspect one of the first things the group will say is open things up. A) If it successful we will move into the 6's and B) if it is successful we could support more junior players.
BUT in some cases direct coaching might be a better solution for a 6 prepping for their first open tourney and something like Trice's bootcamp might be far better than a study group filled with opinions of small equity plays
