Anecdotally, I'd like to share something that I see the bots (and some humans) do. When in one of these type positions, and you dont know what you want to do, there is a theme from the bots. You just try and make the points that are important to you both now and in the future. You have no idea when you'll need them, but thematically, you know that they are part of the long term solution.

So, here in this position, you know you need to make your homeboard, and you know that the 4pt is an important part of that, so you just go ahead and slot it (hit). Its smooth, you dont care about getting hit back (in fact, you want to get your 2pt hit), and you have anchors to land on safely and continue from there.

I played Phil in a match on Sunday, and in the critical game at -4,-4, he was in a 3-5 backgame vs me, holding a 2cube. He relentlessly made progressive points, playing into the outfield, facing multiple direct shots, and just kept trying to improve his endgame position. It was all very 'pure'. But, ultimately, it worked out for him, and I believe the reason was because he chose not to sacrifice his requirements to win in order to not suffer some short term consequences. Obviously, plays are all very position specific, but being able to assess risk, and maintain your game plan at all times are critical to being in a position to take advantage of it. So, kudos Phil.
