The problem here is that there are too many faulty opinions being put forward by people who don't know what they're talking about. I cannot talk to the average Joe about how tournaments are paired... the discussion quickly devolves into really absurd things.

It just falls into the general category of the backgammon community being unwilling to take a good hard look at how things are being run. Status quo is too nice -- let's not change anything. All open level backgammon play should be clocked -- what bothers me most is not that the clocks are gathering dust, but that that tournament directors seem unwilling to try to make big changes.

Backgammon is doomed to remain a niche game unless big changes are made.
