USA vs World PRs

How many people keep a running pip count in speedgammon at all times? I would guess very few, if any.
I'd guess that the only situation where lots of players keep a running count is a relatively close non-contact race, and even then I would guess that most only keep track of the difference in the pip count, not the actual pip counts of both sides (or equivalently, the pip count of one side, together with the difference).
Also, 3 seconds (for most positions) doesn't sound to me like something "many players" can do. Jack Kissane had a reputation for being one of the fastest counters and he only claimed 5 seconds, which is over 60% slower than 3 seconds. Can you name names, and do you know if the 3-second figure comes from actual timings of test positions?
