I'm all in favor of digital clocks too, but... some of this can be tied into the thread on drawsheets. While slow play might shoulder most of the blame, I'd bet not all 8 hours of waiting is because it, and that part of blame goes to the drawsheet. For example, if you get a 1st round bye, win a round or two, then lose, it not unreasonable that you'd be stuck having to wait for 2 matches in the consolation bracket - one for the losers of the 1st round, and another for one of those "extra rounds" which seem to appear in consolation brackets to "even out the ladder".
Regarding extra consolation rounds... its possible to construct drawsheets which dont do this, and therefore minimize waiting. Such a drawsheet plays similarly to a swiss where all the undefeateds are the main bracket, one-loss is the consolation, two-losses the last chance. There's a tradeoff tho: you trade lots of early round byes for a few later round byes and I could understand director's wanting to minimize late round byes. Byes are free-equity, and late round bye gives alot of equity to one player whereas the early round byes would spread this out amongst many players which is seemingly fairer.
