...So what is the deal with the reluctance on the part of the tournament directors to use clocks? Why can't we just use clocks for all matches? Seriously, why not? What's the big deal?

Enough clocks for all the Masters and all the Open matches running at a given moment would require a prohibitive investment for many directors. Having players bring them places an added hardship on those who are flying...if I were required to bring one, that would actually be a big enough factor to push me to not attending! This is not a huge deal in my case alone, since I fly only to one tourney a year on average, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't want to explain what that thing is to airport security. Once was enough!

But I don't see why there can't be enough clocks in the room to allow for clocking of bottlenecks in the brackets, even if the players in question were not at fault; known slow players; and a few matches where the players have requested a clock. (Frequent requesters could be asked to bring their own, naturally. And hopefully there will never be a problem with hacked calibration of same, though having some convenient way to check wouldn't hurt.)

And here's an absolutely free improvement that I've never been clear why it's not in use: Have the tourney start on time! If the first matches are supposed to be played at 12:30, don't be posting the Open drawsheet at 1:10. If you have to start the Calcutta earlier, do so. Worried the players won't attend? Budget for free donuts.
