RE: compact fluorescent bulbs

yes, in part the mercury content

secondly, as with most 'green' products, I note a degree of hypocrisy in their marketing, pricing, and use

I do not know this for certain regarding the compact fluorescent bulbs, but I do suspect most 'green' products are market priced rather than priced based on the cost of manufacture. So, the profit incentive often outweighs the 'green' benefit.

As an example, should a product that costs $10 to develop and manufacture be sold for $15, providing a very reasonable return to the manufacturer, or should it be sold for $100 because it is 'green' and the market will bear the price in comparison to alternatives?

In summary, I think the compact fluorescent bulbs and hybrid cars, among many examples, would be much more widely used if they were more cost effective -- currently they are not at all. And, I think their lack of cost effectiveness is not driven only by their cost of development and manufacture. So, once again, I note substantial hypocrisy in those that promote such items -- they profess their environmental concerns, awareness, and solutions but they retard implementation and usage of their products by trying to greatly increase their profits.

Just my opinion.
