Y2K and Warming

I laughed when I read this post about Y2K. An educated couple I knew actually bought a generator and hoarded food and water barrels expecting disaster. I pointed out to them that I had proof there would be no problems, at least not with the banks: I had an ATM card that was supposed to expire in 1999, but due to a clerical error, was stamped 49 instead of 99. It worked, so the machine was not interpreting it as 1949, but rather as 2049. The bank finally caught the error in 2003 I think, and sent me a new card with a hologram and a more normal lifespan.
I've lost track of that couple, somewhat intentionally, so I don't know where they are on global warming. However, I'll betcha lunch that they think Al Gore invented it. (He didn't, he just made it famous!) This will not be because of their Y2K experience, but because they are arch-conservatives.
The Y2K experience doesn't seem to have slowed people down when it comes to either disbelieving true things or believing nonsense, especially if it's on-line. For examples of the latter, check out the Snopes website and see what your fellow citizens are falling for this week.
