I think that much of the value of Saatchi's approximation derives not from the approximation itself, but from its application to other calculations, like the dead cube take point that he mentioned. Traditionally, you either have to do some mental arithmetic OTB, or you have to memorize yet another table of values. But now, you have a simple formula that doesn't require any memorization of tables. Furthermore, you can derive various other formulas via algebraic manipulation, rather than by laborious curve-fitting on a case-by-case basis.
Of course these simple formulas aren't completely accurate, but the reduction in mental effort seems well worth it.
