Y2K and Warming

Under what circumstances would a program "divide by a year"? I can't think of any.
Clearly not a programmer ;)
And if it did, why would it divide by 00 instead of 2000?
This was the Y2K problem! And saving stuff as only 2 digits instead of 4 saves space. I know, in an era of terabyte+ HDs on personal computers and free servers where no one ever has to delete an e-mail, it's hard to imagine that saving 2 bytes here or there would have made a difference, but back in the olden times, electricity was saved by swapping monitors with arranged candles and bits and bytes were in high demand.
Y2K didn't really live up to the huge mass hysteria it generated, but it wasn't like someone just conceived the whole thing in his mind and published it, either. Errors were, in fact, generated at some point, although they turned out to be pretty minor.
