Having said all that, I'll agree with ah_clem that the easiest way to remember the rule is that you should make the spacing as close to 2.7 as possible.

Right -- that was the gist of Ward's formulation to begin with -- so his 324150 really does cover it in the most economical way, reflecting the core issue that you want to 'hug' that ideal value as closely as possible.
