The variance, or more specifically the high-side tail is critical. It doesn' really matter what the average match length is because it's not the average match that should concern you.

Both Indy back several years ago and Wisconsin and Chicago Open in recent years have done well allowing 2 1/2 hours for a 9-point match in Swiss formats. (There may be more empirical data from Charlotte, too.) I think they may have slipped in a 2 1/4 hour time window in occasionally.

I'm always surprised that the best (if I can say this modestly, or not) study ever done on time required for clocked matches is consistently ignored. I guess good data just isn't on most people's radar. That makes me feel good in some ways since I currently am involved with a company that makes its money on data analysis. If everyone was good at that we would be out of business.
