Perry and I are the founders and principals of BLC. Any teacher we add is not only approved and screened by both of us, they also must have the approval of our executive committee which includes Stick, John O'Hagan and David Rockwell. We also poll the other teachers to get their input.
When someone like David Presser (your example) wishes to join our group he must be approved by our committee, but also we must be confident, from personal experience, that he not only plays well, but is also excellent at explaining the game and teaching. I had persoanlly worked with David for two years and when I was in charge of the Mentor Program for USBGF I assigned David to a couple of new members and I monitored progress. The feedback on David was outstanding.
The training and material we give to a new teacher is extensive (and confidential) but i will tell you we have over 100 lesson plans and a large volume of material and a step-by-step approach to teaching players of each level.
I will also tell you that there are many people who have expressed an interest in joining our grouo that we have rejected--and some are giants. They may be great players but we insist that they have great teaching skills. And there may be other reasons to reject someone--perhaps we dont feel they will put in enough time teaching or get along well woth the group.
Bottom line is that one of the things I am most proud of is my involvement in this group with these amazing people and when I walk into a tournament room anywhere in the world I see dozens of people who are enjoying the game more and winning more because of the lessons they have taken from one of us.
