I've dreamt about something along these lines as well. I'd go with tagging: Every user shall be allowed to give any position as many tags as she wants, and then the website offers nifty browsing features based on those tags (think del.icio.us, youtube or flickr). Hopefully then a useful 'folksonomy' evolves, but if it doesn't, you can at least fall back on the positions you tagged yourself.
