The gain is that with any roll except 66 there is a possibility of a misplay the next turn gaining a decision you will play correctly resulting in a lower PR and thus being a better backgammon player. Other plays give fewer rolls that would result in a decision.
My understanding is that XG doesn't credit you with a decision if the only mis-plays are really big errors, and failing to bear off and save gammon would be a sizable error. So I'm not sure if this play would result in a lower PR.
