Memorizing backgammon positions

In Response To: Memorizing backgammon positions (Timothy Chow)

How about if I give you one month for you (or someone else like Mochy or Phil) to email me a list of all (reasonable) third-roll positions in nactation form

It's like you're trying to help me to win the bet lol. That's how I first came to memorize all the second rolls. The issue of not only doing the rollout but then uploading them to my site and emailing people about it made it so I couldn't forget them if I tried.

You will have two hours to complete the test by restoring the final nactation character

Hmm...how about no? The two hour time constraint as UBK mentioned was never part of the deal, esp. at that speed. I used to love mad minutes (as many math problems as you could do in a minute) and destroy them but for this where I get one wrong and I lose the bet? No way will I take any time constraint that rushes me.

Second part of your sentence, no. You can have your memory experts memorize the Nactation string if you like, I'm going to tell you the correct play and have a board in front of me if I like. (preferably computer screen) Hell, I feel pretty comfortable with Nactation but I'm sure there's some third roll 11 that I would have to learn not only the correct play, but the correct Nactation.

I don't mind some time constraint or doing it over two sessions. First session the first 500 problems, second session the final 500 problems. I also don't care about a proctor or it being streamed or whatever for that matter.

How much money would you need to make this test worth your while? What odds are you willing to give?

I imagine more than you're willing to put up. You can toss a number out if you like. Why am I suddenly giving odds?!

I'm not a big fan of backing other players to do the same thing but I would if my selections told me they would do it. With Jake's memory I suspect he could memorize them over night, Nack might already know them all, and if the money was right I think even the slackers like Chris Yep and Bob Koca might be able to pull it off.
