Memorizing backgammon positions

A 'next' can mean a couple of different things and I wouldn't want to try to define it to perfection here. Often during an OLM esp. over at Kit's forums you'll see "NEXT!" when a play is obvious (should be) to any okay backgammon player. A next should be all the second rolls because they come up time and time and time and time again. Are they for all players? No, not even close. The third rolls aren't nearly as important as the second rolls because of the frequency that a particular 3rd roll occurs v. a 2nd roll sequence. Anything that to the general player is (should be) smack your forehead obvious can be considered a next.

Every world class player should know the MET up to 21 vs 21 accurate to 5 d.p. and if there was any real money in it they would.

This seems left fieldish to me. What I'm suggesting is actually useful in regular backgammon where what you're suggesting to the point you're suggesting it is practically useless.
