Memorizing backgammon positions

It's not clear that time isn't better spent on other things. I don't think I've ever said or implied it wouldn't be. Depending on the player there are a lot of other things that might be more worth their time. When you get to the elite level though you're running out of things you can tangibly grasp on and improve without question. It is better, as you imply, to understand the 3rd rolls than to simply have them memorized. By understanding them instead of memorizing them it would add even that much more to your early game checker play. You may only get 99% of the correct but your errors would be ultra tiny and the comprehension spilling over into the rest of the game would be where your buck was at. Still, if all you manage to do is flat out memorize them, well, that can't hurt your game either.
