I think that it's a variation on the theme of wanting to increase the complexity of the game vs. a weaker player in order to lead him into unfamiliar positions. I know for certain that I become accustomed to the rote play of the bots, and to a lesser extent bot-trained human opponents who play at a high level. You see some crazy shit playing against weaker players, as anyone who has ever played against me will be happy to confirm. When the number of formulaic decisions to be made in a match decreases, it's a virtual certainty that most of us will take full advantage of the opportunity to make more errors as a result.
