Just Wondering

The other day I was playing a weak opponent. His opening roll was 6-2 and he ran a checker all the way.
I rolled a 3-1. I hit him. I should have made my 5 point. So I made a mistake on the second roll of the game that would never happen if I was playing a good player who made the standard opening 6-2 play.
Bad players are constantly showing you positions and situations you are not familiar with.
And you should adjust your game if you are playing a worse player...you should avoid pure running games; you should drop sooner if gammon risks are higher and you should avoid higher cubes...and of course, you play top players just the opposite.
Howard Ring always used to preach that it's not your Snowie rating that matters, it's the difference in your rating between yourself and your opponent.
If you double too soon but get a drop, you get a worse rating...but it was clearly the right play.
So for all those reasons, plus the fact that you might well play more carefully against a better player, you will generally score better against better players.
