Dmitriy was right of course (and he usually is, so this is a very safe statement). If you don't cube and get a bad take next turn, you are in the same situation you would have been in anyway.
The gain from not doubling comes on your bad sequences, you don't get to play these with the cube on 4 (held by your opp), but with you owning a 2 cube.
Your opponent's bad takes help to eliminate losses from not doubling, but you don't gain there.
