I think that the project of promoting interesting streaming spectatorship is tightly related to the project of publicizing tournament results in real time, so that the backgammon audience can have a strong feeling that they are "following" a major tournament as it unfolds.
It would be really powerful if, for example, the USBGF site posted the Championship draw immediately after it was posted in the playing room, and then highlighted Streaming matches with a link to the Live Feed (and perhaps afterwards with a link to the video file).
Match Results should be posted immediately after they are reported, and when play stops for a session, a banner across the top of the draw could say "Play to resume at 7:00 PM (EST)."
If we had something like this set up, there would be a much stronger sense that people could genuinely "follow" tournaments, and there could be a genuine sense of anticipation for upcoming matches to be streamed -- and of course, public could mark their calendars that they want to watch the Finals on Sunday at 1:00 or whenever.
Who knows, maybe if this were well enough constructed it would be easier to publicize to a wider public as a spectator event -- maybe there would even be sponsors interested in having their logo on the streaming page?
As it is, the opportunity to watch a streaming match seems very haphazard to me, so I rarely do it.
While I am proposing other people build castles in the sky for me, I think it would be even better if the USBGF site had a Profile entry for each player -- at minimum, just his or her name -- but ideally with a photo portrait and a short bio okayed by the player. The event drawsheet would pop-up these little bio summaries when you click on names.
