Fun and creative approach. I like it. Let me propose an idea.

I would have the players bid for the bye.

For example, let's say the prize pool is $1000.00 and $700 goes to first place and $300 goes to second.

Each player writes down on a piece of paper how much money they are willing to add to the prize pool in order to get a bye. The one with the highest bid gets the bye.

So let's say I bid $400.00. And I am the highest bidder. I pay $400 and that goes into the prize pool, making the entire pool $1400.00. And it is still split 70/30.

Another way to bid is to bid on point give-aways. Let's say there are going to be 7 point matches. Each player writes down on a piece of paper how many points they would be willing to spot their opponent if they were given the bye, and the player who gave away the most points wins. So if I am willing to give 3 points and no one bids more, I get the bye and my opponent starts out 3-0.

If two players bid the same number, then those two players bid again and keep bidding until one is higher than the other.

And lastly, here is my favorite: bid for who takes third place. Each player writes down on a piece of paper how much of the prize pool they will accept to take 3rd place, and the one who writes down the lowest amount gets that amount and the other two play for the rest.
