First, I do see the problems with bidding for a bye...players have different amounts of money to risk or that they are willing to risk. I also see the problem with having such a big luck factor play a part in who gets a bye...you get down to the end of a tournament, and you want to have the final result depend more on skill. So, why not have a skill-based solution?
Simply give the three remaining players a short, written test, with say, 5-10 problems, and whoever scores the best gets the bye to the finals. This won't take long and it is very likely that the better player will get the bye, and by being better, he earned it.
Also, the test would be interesting and after the finalists take the quiz it could be made available or given to everyone for a special prize. Or it could be a contest entered for charity...a 50/50.
Everyone who wants to take the quiz pays $5.00 and half the money goes to the winner and the other half to the UKBGF children's program, and everyone gets back an answer sheet and explanation...something nice and fun and educational to add to the tournament experience.
