Botched Cube Scenario

My intuition is different, and is (I believe) similar to David Rennie's. The physical cube is really just an aid for helping the players keep track of the game state. My feeling is that there is only one cube and that it's on 4.
For comparison, consider another scenario in which there is a redouble to 4 that is taken, and that in the course of moving the cube from the middle of the board to the side, the player accidentally sets the cube down with some number other than 4 on top, and neither player notices for a while. Surely the cube is on 4 regardless of what number happens to be on top.
In both cases, the relevant facts are that A doubled, B took; then B doubled, and A took. The physical dispositions of the cubes aren't important as long as the facts about the sequence of doubles and takes are not under dispute.
A more entertaining scenario might be: A doubles; B takes. They both forget that this is what has happened. The advantage swings back and forth in an exciting game. In the heat of the moment, A grabs a second cube, believing it to be a centered cube. B drops! Now what?
I think the answer is that the illegal double is ignored and the game continues with B owning a single cube on 2, but would people of the "two cubes" school of thought rule that B loses a single point and also has to play out the position with the cube on 2?
