You're far from alone. Unfortunately, about the only rules that stipulate up and down shaking are those written by Simborg, Bower and Horton; they also stipulate at least three such shakes. Other rule sets leave it all up in the air.

Dubious shaking is still probably better than no shaking, and I see a fair bit of that in the streaming. I tend to quickly switch off when I do.
