Dave, I am sure I have seen Joe's name on the short list, but don't recall seeing Svobo's.

Sly was twenty-one in 1983, when he won the Plimpton Cup. A few years later he won the first World Cup. I am pretty sure a very fine lecture I attended of his was at the World Cup in 1994. That's around the time he dropped from sight.

Joe was a terrible money player, wrote but a few articles, and didn't do much besides win tournaments. But oh, did he do that! During that eleven year span he was the dominant player, and that's really not saying nearly enough. You could perhaps call 1983 the end of the post-boom era, the point where the glory days of the seventies were truly done, and the game was better known for the cheating scandals in LA and Chicago. And 1994 was the dawn (in the US, anyway) of the computer era, with US players starting to sign up for a thing called FIBS, and buying Expert Gammon to do "roll outs." If you wanted to call the eleven years in between the "Joe Sylvester Era," you could.
