Gerry Tesauro of IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center wrote the first expert-strength backgammon program, TD-Gammon, which learned by self-play. TD-Gammon set the pattern for all strong backgammon programs since then, so it’s historically very important.

Gerry Tesauro's pioneering work in developing neural network bots has probably had the single biggest impact on the modern game. Ignoring his contribution because his association with backgammon was only for a few years, is like relegating Mozart, Schubert and Bellini as minor composers because they died in their 30s!
