I found Neil's comment intriguing. It might help to improve my game..

I often make blunders when I try to prioritize the multiple applicable rules of thumb for a given position. My problem is that the rules of thumb sometimes contradict each other (grab adv. anchor / race escape / strengthen prime / tempo hit etc). I guess I have problems weighting which ones should take precedence when they all seem about equal.

Are there any general rules of thumb for *when* tactical considerations would outweigh positional ones?

i.e. Can this idea be stated in example sentences like..

"Tactical considerations outweigh positional considerations when x, y, z"

And conversely, are there any general rules of thumb for *when* positional considerations would outweigh tactical ones?
