Rule interpretation

What about if a die comes to rest between two checkers, at an angle, but where the top-facing number is identifiable? Is that to be considered a valid roll, like if the die were on top of a dimpled checker?
Since this scenario is not explicitly covered, while the dimpled checker scenario is, my guess would be that it is an invalid roll, but to me it is not clear.
