I view bg as a major puzzle, with hundreds of different situations which needs to be understood and remembered. From that perspective you just need to play and study lots and lots for several years, and you certainly will improve from that.
Some people think of the very best players as geniuses with natural talent for the game, but I believe it is mostly a matter of seeing more situations and having more practice. Guys like Falafel and Tardieu and Kaz and all those danish pros, not to forget that crazy Stick guy, all they ever do is play and play and play and study and study and study. That's what it takes to bring your game to a new level.
