I would suggest playing money games. AND analyze & reply each game right after you finish it. [...] If you're going to play matches, make them short matches

Against a bot, there is no compelling reason to play entire matches or games. You can play games with the match score reset to an interesting value each time. You can play from some fixed position and stop and start again when it doesn't belong to the theme you want to explore any more.
