What about buying a bye?--fairness for money vs. ABT points

I agree that being able to buy a bye, or paying for a rebuy is fair for players in a given tournament, but at the end of the year could affect standings for ABT or USBGF or other point standings. Yes, there is a conflict between the two concepts.
Having said that, a simple solution is to adjust the points when a player gets a bye, whether he/she paid for it or not.
Now that there is a new leadership for the ABT, I know that there is a potential to make some changes/improvements in the system. I also know that there is always resistance to change, and many people hate it, but every other game and sport I know has made major changes over the years to keep up with the changing conditions and demands.
I hope the USBGF will consider major changes in awarding points, and I hope they do take into account byes in awarding points. I hope that more people can earn points...in fact, some points every time you win a match. The way it is now, very few people walk away from a tournament with money or points for their trouble, and so many more come close and are frustrated that they only needed to win one more match in the open, and one more match in consolation, and one more match in last chance to get a few points and a little money. Why not have more people walk away with SOMETHING? Even if it's not money, at least some points?
But even if the system is not changed, and maybe a couple of people end up with a few more ABT points because they paid for a bye or paid for a rebuy, does it really matter to us that much compared to having a fairer tournament each time? I think that should be the first consideration.
