You don't need any approval. Just a valid email address will enable you to register a user.
You can play matches as on gridgammon or other play sited and then you can do a million other things! :-)
A couple of days go I added support for playing tournaments:
which I think is pretty cool! I'll post a bigger announcement about it later.
Playing matches works more or less as you'd expect but perhaps the most fun version is a 'consultation match' where you get instant feedback on how well you play:
It can be cruel to see those red (blunder) moves show up but it forces you to play as well as you can. And you can ask your opponent for input on moves you play poorly.
