Chuck, I agree with most of your advice. But, I strongly disagree with your assessment of 3 point matches. There isn't any match length that I hate more than 3 point matches. Luck is a large factor in these short games. Cubing permutations are very limited. When I played online, the common 3 point match formula was beneficial to the server. They earned their money quickly. Yet, the player can be quickly overwhelmed by losing a 4 point game. Or even if you lose 2 points in the first game, the cube is not available to you in the second game. Gosh!! Do I hate the 3 point match.
5 point matches are the minimum to enjoy some cube permutations. My study of cubing tables lead me to believe that 9 point matches are the absolute minimum to enjoy various match cubing strategy. Personally, I play exclusively 5 point and 11 point matches against Snowie or GNU.
