I've worked with OS7,8,9,10 All the way through, they are the single most painful OS' to work with. They simply do not network well with Windows. I agree, they are pretty, and easy, but really, if you want to do anything complex with them, then you are in trouble. I speak from experience.
I only had 0S 9 for compatibility test and it architecture was stone age. Os X is a different kind. It's my bread and butter OS for years now and it simply works and the things I have to do to keep it running are close to zero. Including not having to care for malware, installing the newest Anti-something etc. If you have different experiences I would be interested why you think OS X is painful. I personally know about 6-8 people in my surrounding that have switched and they all were between satisfied and excited.

As for Ubuntu, yes its also fairly user friendly, but its simply not mainstream enough to be of significant value. If you are a Linux / Unix guy, then great, but for your average user who just wants to analyze BG, read email, surf the web etc, Vista & XP are nice and easy to use. I thunk Ubuntu or Suse or (especially) PCBSD are dead easy to use.

I have found the chief Vista complainers to be the ones that simply dont have a powerful enough machine to use it on, and the chief champions of Vista are the opposite (like me lol).
Well if my quad is not enough.....

Its just a matter of taste really, but I do urge you to consider spending more time on Vista, it is easy to use, and I find it to be rock solid.
alone the UAC is so ridiculous. Or migrating an installation. I want to migrate my old Toshiba with XP to an VM (because there is a lot Software installed I need and the box is 4.5 years old so....) I spent hours without success. I didn't remember exactly, but it crashed in normal mode and in safe mode I can't enter my license key, that made further upgrades impossible. On OS X, I use e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper copy it to a new maschine, that's it, minus the copying process at most 5 minutes of work.

Just make sure you switch the crap off (video backgrounds, user account controls etc). Software is being developed for it much more, and it tends to be very stable these days.
Without UAC you hurting your security pretty much? Just security reasons let me avoid to go in the net with a Windows something, The latest breed of malware is pretty dangerous.
