Professional Basketball (NBA) Rules Question

I think there are two scenarios to consider.
1) The ball will be live after a miss. In this case once the ball hits the ground the other players could intercept it. If it still managed to go in it would count just like any other time during play. Basically the ball becomes "live" once it hits the ground as it would be interpreted as a miss (like an "air-ball").
2) The ball will be dead after a miss (either the first of two, a technical foul, etc.). The shot would not count. The refs would interpret the shot as having missed since it hit the ground (like with any normally taken free throw). That it happens to go in after hitting the ground would be cool but immaterial.
I'm not a ref or anything related to the NBA, but I did play basketball competitively for 25 years so I'm going on intuition here.
