Creative ideas wanted for Beginner's Tournament

I'm with Bob. I remember the first time I traveled to an ABT event and played "Limited". If I would have gotten there and heard the director say, "The Limited players will play a whole bunch of one point matches" I would have been a little insulted and thought "This is not what I came here for". I wanted to play competitive tournament backgammon vs other like-minded and like-skilled people. I'm not sure that backgammon variants are a good idea in a main event, not even a Novice main event.

The idea that I like for Novices that was posted previously by someone is to have two separate tournaments, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
